The Public Architect: A Five-Part Podcast Series

A new mini-series of the SAHGB podcast will be released this summer, funded by the RIBA and hosted by Jess Kelly and Claire Jamieson.

The Public Architect is a five-part podcast series, released fortnightly from Friday 10th July, bringing together historians, policy experts and practitioners to consider how the architectural profession has understood and related to the public from the post-war period to today. Considering the role of planning systems, local government, architectural research, twenty-two contributors share their understanding of the changes within the architectural profession and its relationship to society across this history.

Episode One:
The first episode, ‘Past and Present’, to be released Friday 10th July, features John Gold, Mike Althorpe, Andrea Jung, David Knight and Holly Lewis to consider where the profession’s relationship to the public has developed from, and where it might be going next.

Episode Two:
The second episode ‘Research, Experiment, Exchange’ considers the changing institutional contexts of cutting edge sociological, technical and material research across built environment professions, and how the changing implementation of research across institutions shapes the built environment. In this episode we were joined by Ruth Lang, Natcha Ruamsanitwong, Patrick Zamarian, Rafe Bertram and Flora Samuel and it will be published 24th July.

Episode Three:
Episode three, ‘Identity of the Architect’, considers the normative assumptions about architects’ identities in terms of gender, race and class which have shaped the profession and its perception by society, asking how these processes have themselves shaped the built environment. This episode features Kate Macintosh, Yemi Aladerun, Sarah Allen, Karen Burns and Elizabeth Darling and will be released on 7th August.

Episode Four:
The penultimate episode, ‘Colonial Contexts’, will be published on the 21st August and considers the way that architectural education and culture in post-war Britain was shaped by longstanding connections across the British Empire, featuring discussions with Yemi Ola, Rixt Woudstra and Harshada Deshpande.

Episode Five:
The final episode of The Public Architect will be released on 4th September, featuring Otto Saumarez Smith, Kendra Inman, Luca, Csepely-Knorr, Maddy Gunn and Finn Williams to discuss the ‘Expanded Role of the Architect’, considering the way that interdependencies between architects and allied professions, from landscape architects to planners produced new modes of connection between the public and the built environment.
