Submissions are open to three prizes within our prestigious awards programme: The Hawksmoor Essay Medal, The Heritage Research Award, and the Dissertation Prizes.

Hawksmoor Essay Medal
The Hawksmoor Essay Medal is awarded annually for the best unpublished essay in architectural history. The competition is open to current postgraduate students and early career researchers. The winner will receive a bronze medal, a £400 cash prize, one year’s SAHGB membership, and the opportunity to develop the essay for publication in Architectural History.

Heritage Research Award
The SAHGB-IHBC Heritage Research Award recognises and celebrates the quality of architectural-historical research produced by colleagues in heritage and conservation practice, as private consultants and in non-departmental public bodies. Winning work will receive a recently commissioned medal.

Dissertation Prize
Annually, we award two prizes celebrating the outstanding work carried out by postgraduate students on taught Masters-level courses in UK universities. One prize for MArch courses, and one for MA/MSc courses. They reward innovative and critical thinking in and around the subject of Architectural History, broadly conceived, which supports the Society’s aim to help create ‘a bigger discipline’. Nominations are currently invited from course leaders, tutors, and directors.
