Call for Deputy Editors

Deputy editors are sought for Architectural History, the journal of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. Successful applicants will be appointed to the editorial board from spring 2026. The post is for three years. Those with expertise on periods before the twentieth century and/or architecture in the Global South are particularly encouraged to apply.

Architectural History is a highly regarded double-blind, peer-reviewed international journal that publishes significant original and interpretive research on buildings, the built environment, the history of architectural theory, and architectural historiography, in all places and periods. Articles in Architectural History are intended to be rigorous, analytical, and contextual, situating their subjects within broader debates about the history and understanding of architecture.

The journal, which first appeared in 1958, is the principal publication of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB). It has an international readership in academia, the heritage sector, and among a broad interested public. The journal is one of the Society’s three platforms, alongside the magazine and podcast, with opportunities for cross-platform collaboration and editorial support according to the Society’s commitment to disseminate knowledge across audiences interested in architectural history: ‘All Places, All Periods, All Welcome’. From 2026, the journal will be published under a fully Open Access format with Ubiquity Press.

The duties of deputy editors include: contributing to discussions at regular editorial board meetings (typically held online); assessing the suitability of articles for peer review; working closely with authors on article revisions; editing texts to maximise their quality and ensure they conform to the style and conventions of the journal; liaising with the Editor to deliver articles ready for copy editing and publication.

The post comes with a modest honorarium.

Applicants should have some or all of the following:

  • An appropriate level of academic experience related to architectural history or closely related fields. The journal is particularly interested in applicants with expertise on periods before the twentieth century and/or architecture in the Global South.

  • Experience in academic publishing and editing.

  • The ability to work with the Editor and other members of the editorial board.

  • Discretion and tact in dealing with authors and others.

  • A realistic sense of the workloads involved.
