Study Day to Lincoln Cathedral Close

A day exploring the medieval close of Lincoln Cathedral, including insights by experts undertaking new dendrochronology research, and exclusive access to buildings not open to the public.

As Pevsner famously wrote, ‘A bicycle shed is a building; Lincoln Cathedral is a piece of architecture’. With its magnificent hilltop location, Lincoln Cathedral presents one of the great sights of medieval architecture.

The close surrounding the cathedral has a complex layered history, and new research has just been completed using dendrochronology methods to date its buildings. This Study Day will showcase the results of this research, including privileged access to the Dean’s residence (the medieval Chancery), and other buildings in the Close not open to the public. The tour will also include access to the Cathedral and the Cathedral roofs. It will be led by Dr Jonathan Clark, the Cathedral Archaeologist, alongside the dendrochronology team of Matt Hurford, Roderick Bale, Alison Arnold, and Robert Howard.

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available on arrival, and lunch will be provided. Please advise of any dietary restrictions.
