Stevenson Trust Fund and Wakeling Bequest for Education, Research and Outreach

The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain provides grants of up to £3000 to support Masters, PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in both academia and other organisations. Our new grant making format launched in April 2026.

1. Research Visit Grant+

Up to £2,000

Up to £2000 towards the expenses incurred in visiting collections, libraries, archives or historic sites within the United Kingdom or abroad for research purposes.

Eligibility Masters, PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs).

2. Support towards fees during PhD Write-up Year+

Up to £1,000

Up to £1000 towards support for PhD students in their final / writing up year for support with fees. Fees paid directly to the institution.

Eligibility PhD students in their final year.

3. Support towards fees for a Master's degree student+

Up to £1,000

Up to £1000 towards the costs of fees for a Master's degree. This is only to cover fees set by the applicant's institution and is to be paid directly to the institution.

Eligibility Students on taught Masters-level courses in architectural history and/or heritage in the UK.

4. Outreach and Engagement Grant+

Up to £2,500

Up to £2,500 to organise an event that brings architectural history research to the broader public and non-specialist audiences.

Eligibility Masters, PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs).

5. SAHGB Conference Support for ECR+

Up to £500

Up to £500 support to attend the SAHGB conference for students / precariously employed ECRs.

Eligibility Masters, PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) without a permanent work contract.

6. Creation of SAHGB EDI & ECR Network annual symposium or event+

Up to £3,000

Up to £3000 to bring together the SAHGB's early career /EDI network for an annual workshop or symposium.

Eligibility SAHGB EDI and ECR Network conveners.
