John Newman (1936 - 2023)

The Society reports with great sadness the death of John Newman our former President (1988-1992) and the longest serving Editor of Architectural History (1975- 1985).

With his long tenure at the Courtauld Institute from 1966 John was instrumental in the advancement of the study of early modern architecture in Britain. He was best known for his pioneering work on Inigo Jones and as the author of a number of volumes in the Buildings of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales series. He began with two books on his beloved Kent and he was for many years Advisory Editor for the Pevsner Guides. He played a major role in the conservation world as a member of many committees including the Historic Buildings Council and the Advisory Board for Redundant Churches.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, former colleagues and students.
