Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion

The Alice David Hitchcock Medallion (which features a relief portrait of James 'Athenian' Stuart) is given annually to the author of the best architectural history book published in the past four years by a British author or by a foreign author on a British architectural historical subject. Nominations are solicited by the Society from members each Spring, a shortlist drawn up by the Executive Committee and a decision made by a reading Sub-Committee.

The award was instituted by Professor Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903-87), and named after his mother. Professor Hitchcock was one of the greatest architectural historians of the twentieth century. American by birth and nationality but also European in his scholarly range, Hitchcock was a supportive presence at the meeting in Durham in March 1956 at which the Society was founded.

A list of winners of the Medallion in the Society's history appears below. Clicking on a linked winner takes you to the SAHGB citation (available for the most recent winners).
