The organisations listed below are not affiliated with the SAHGB, but have been chosen for listing here because of their similarities of aims or likely interest to viewers of the SAHGB's pages.

 

Architectural History Societies

 
European Architectural History Network Centred at the Technical University, Delft, the EAHN is a recently founded and growing organisation with a regular international academic conference; tours and one-day symposia; an email list and newsletter; and a website including notices of events and book reviews.
 
Society of Architectural Historians Founded in 1940 and based in Chicago, the SAH is the largest international architectural history organisation with an annual conference, highly regarded quarterly journal and many other events and study trips.
 
Society of Architectural Historians of Australia and New Zealand SAHANZ was established in 1984, and has an annual international conference as well as publishing the academic journal Fabrications.
 
Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland The society is concerned with campaigning to protect Scotland's architectural heritage, and organises frequent study tours and lectures.
 
British Archaeological Association The BAS holds an annual conference and publishes the proceedings, with an emphasis on (though not confined to) medieval archaeology.
 
The Society for Church Archaeology Promotes the study and conservation of churches, with a journal, newsletter and a research grant for church archaeology.
 
Institute of Historic Building Conservation The IHBC is the principal professional body for building conservation practitioners and historic environment specialists working in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with connections to the Republic of Ireland. Especially concerned with offering and accrediting courses in conservation.
The C. F. A. Voysey Society Recently founded, the society encourages research into all aspects of Voysey's life and work and intends to help to maintain his legacy. Amongst other activities, the Society aims to develop a programme of lectures and visits.
 

National Amenity and Conservation Societies


English Heritage Advises the government on historic buildings, creates and maintains the statutory listing of historic buildings, advises on conservation, conducts research in architectural history, maintains sites of historic interest and educates the public on the historic environment. The website includes access to the National Heritage List.

Historic Scotland An executive agency of the Scottish Government charged with safeguarding the nation’s historic environment and promoting its understanding and enjoyment.
 
Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland RCAHMS collects, records and interprets information on the architectural, industrial, archaeological and maritime heritage of Scotland. Its publicly accessible database, Canmore, includes digital images and detailed information on historic buildings in Scotland.
 
Cadw The Welsh Assembly Government's historic environment division, it aims to protect and sustain, encourage community engagement in, and improve access to the historic environment of Wales, including historic buildings, ancient monuments, historic parks, gardens and landscapes, and underwater archaeology.

Council for British Archaeology The CBA is an educational charity working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment.

Ancient Monuments Society A National Amenity Society advising the government on conservation, which campaigns for the preservation of historic monuments, and publishes a list of buildings under threat.

Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings Founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract the destructive 'restoration' of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects. Today it is the largest, oldest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage, and encouraging excellence in new design to enrich and complement the historic environment.

The Georgian Group The national charity dedicated to preserving Georgian buildings and gardens, consulted on planning applications involving demolition or alterations. The group offers grants for conservation and awards for exemplary projects.

The Victorian Society Concerned with campaigning for the protection of Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

The Twentieth Century Society Exists to safeguard the heritage of architecture and design in Britain from 1914 onwards. The Society’s prime objectives are conservation, to protect the buildings and design that characterise the Twentieth Century in Britain, and education, to extend our knowledge and appreciation of them, including an annual academic journal.

The Garden History Society The oldest society in the world dedicated to the conservation and study of historic designed gardens and landscapes. Campaigns to save and conserve historic gardens and advises the government on their protection.

Architectural Humanities Research Association Support network for researchers in architectural humanities across the UK and beyond, with email newsletter and regular events including an annual international conference.

Association of Art Historians The national organisation for professional art historians and researchers in the field, organises an international academic conference and publishes the leading peer-reviewed journal Art History.

The Ecclesiological Society For anyone interested in the architecture, art and liturgy of the Christian church. Organises regular lectures and building visits and publishes a journal, Ecclesiology Today.

The Victoria County History An encyclopaedic record of England's places and people from earliest times to the present day, entirely digitised and available online.

Friends of Friendless Churches Campaigns for the preservation of ancient and beautiful but redundant churches; owns over 40 former places of worship in England and Wales for public access and enjoyment.

Looking at Buildings An introductory resource in architectural history, with guides to historic architecture in English cities.
 
Pevsner Architectural Guides The classic standard guidebooks to British and Irish architecture.

The Construction History Society Academic organisation promoting research in Construction History, with leading academic journal, annual international conference and student awards.
