The Annual Lecture
John Goodall, “The Gatehouse”
Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House, The Strand, London
Wednesday 30 November 2011
5.30pm - Reception | 6.00pm - Presentation of Awards | 6.15pm - Lecture
The speaker at this year's annual lecture and awards ceremony will be John Goodall, Architectural Editor of Country Life and author of God's House at Ewelme and most recently The English Castle.
John Goodall’s lecture will trace the history of gatehouse architecture in England. It will explore the significance of these buildings and also the influences at play on their design. One of the most striking continuities in the tradition of grand English architecture from the 11th to the 17th century is a fascination with the gatehouse. Such structures appear in buildings of all kinds from castles to monastic foundations and from university colleges and almshouses to aristocratic residences. They are consistently treated with greater care and invention than gatehouses in any other part of Europe.
Tickets, priced £10.00, (£4.00 registered students) are available from Pete Smith, 17 Villa Road, Nottingham. NG3 4GG (flyer enclosed) or at
