Joshua Goolden receives SAHGB MA Scholarship

We are thrilled to announce Joshua Goolden as this year’s recipient of the Society’s Masters’ Bursary scheme. Joshua will use the £20,000 bursary to attend the MA in Sustainable Heritage Management course at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture.

As part of the Society’s commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion this scholarship scheme, generously supported by the Arnold Hayward Stevenson Educational Trust Fund, aims to address the significant, often structural, barriers to postgraduate study. Each year we encourage underrepresented communities to imagine their futures in architectural history and to apply for this bursary. We hope that the support will be transformational for the successful candidate, opening up the possibility of further study and career development in architectural history in higher education, heritage practice and/or museums and collections.

The judging panel, consisting of SAHGB Trustee Doreen Bernath and EDI Network coordinators Christiane Buxton and Rebecca Preston were particularly impressed by the strength of the applications noting that ‘there were many excellent submissions for the SAHGB MA scholarship, which made judging particularly hard. Even so, the successful application shone through in its ambition, clarity and sense of purpose. We hope it will be transformative.

Upon receipt of the award, Joshua said:

I’m truly thrilled and incredibly grateful to have been selected for the SAHBG MA scholarship. Having just graduated from my undergraduate architecture degree at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture, I now look forward to progressing my studies even further; studying Sustainable heritage management also at Liverpool. Receiving this funding will help ensure I’m able to focus on my studies appropriately, avoiding obstacles such as financing my tuition and maintenance. I look forward to commencing my studies this September, and I’m very hopeful for what may come of my future career in heritage architecture post-graduation.

Ataa Alsalloum, Course Director of the MA, said:

We heartily congratulate Joshua Goolden on securing a scholarship from The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain to join our MA programme in Sustainable Heritage Management, a course fully recognised by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation. At the School of Architecture at the University of Liverpool, we are always enthusiastic about welcoming exceptional talents like Joshua. His accomplishment aptly illustrates the calibre of students we anticipate for our upcoming cohort. As we eagerly look forward to guiding him through his academic odyssey, we remain deeply appreciative of the unwavering support from the SAHGB. Your commitment to cultivating the next wave of architectural historians is truly commendable.

The Society would like to congratulate Joshua on his success. We are grateful to the trustees of the Arnold Hayward Stevenson Educational Trust Fund for the generous bequest which has made this award possible.
